A Trip Through New Orleans
June, 2006

This house seemed deserted but perhaps
the family was attempting to retake their home!
Time goes by very quickly lately. A good example of that is the
fact that these pictures of New Orleans were taken almost a year ago
when we went on vacation. Actually, we had to go to Houston so Nan
could finish up her paperwork for her Montessori Teacher’s Certificate,
so while we were at it, we decided to continue eastward to Georgia to
visit my brother. New Orleans was on the way, so we stopped to see if
there were any improvements since the hurricane the previous year.

Although things were getting back to near normal, there were still
hundreds of homes and businesses still un-repaired, and the city much
less populated since the devastating event. We were able to stay at a
nice down town hotel, but we were one of the few tourists at the time.
The French Quarter was building back it’s business, but slowly.

The French Quarter was one of the first
places back on its feet.

Tourism was slowly returning when we
visited.
We hear that there are a lot more
businesses open again, and more old city dwellers back to start over.
However, there still remains a lot of the scenes we observed and no way
for many of the native folks to return. Some how this doesn’t seem
right, but we did see many hard working people attempting to put their
lives back together – hope they succeeded.

Living in a trailer while working on the
place; abandoning forever; or trying to get out with something to
start over with. Such was the condition of New Orleans residents
last year, and still today.
Let this be a lesson to the rest of us
in this country: If disaster strikes your home, be prepared the best you can
because we have learned that our federal government may not be up for the task of
helping. It seems our government has other priorities, and is
using our tax
money for other “projects”. Please consider who you send to
Washington, D.C. next time you get around to voting. You never know
when Mother Nature will deal you a swift kick in the pants for not
paying attention to her many moods.

Bowed but not broken.
