Memories by the
Side of the Road

There’s something about a carcass of an old car by the side of the road that makes you want to stop, look it over, and reflect about its history.  Even if you’re not familiar with the make, model, and year of the old relic, it’s hard to pass by an opportunity to look at the vehicle, take a few pictures, and wonder just how many years the car or truck served its owner.  Speculating on how it came to be resting in someone’s field or barnyard rather then the local auto salvage yard is tentative at best.

While we were motoring through Texas and Louisiana last year, in one of those states we came across this “graveyard” of stripped vehicle frames.  They were all from the 1920’s and 30’s, we think, and wearing a rust color from years of idleness and neglect.  Their resting place was in front of a country garage which displayed old gas company signs.  The signs were in better condition more than likely because they were hanging on an active auto repair shop building.

As it was a Sunday, no one was out and about to talk to us about their collection of car and truck bodies.  Nan and I stayed as close to the road as we could so as not to trespass. We shot many color and b & w film along with digital images; the images shown here are digital.  The camera was set on black and white to fit the motif of the location and vehicles, and the flavor of their age.
